Students Raise Over $3,000 for Project Eliminate

KIWANIS, K-Kids & Builders Club News:
 
Three local schools set up a Penny Wars contest to raise money for the Kiwanis/UNICEF Project Eliminate.
 
Barranca K-Kids and the Middle School Builders Club called their effort “Penny Wars” and Aspen K-Kids chose to call their fundraiser “Penny Pileup” because they did not like the connotation of war in the title.

Public Invited to Join DPU Board for San Juan Chama Water Well Tour

DPU News:

The Department of Public Utilities is conducting a tour of proposed well sites for the San Juan-Chama Water Supply Project followed by public discussion, Thursday, May 23, at White Rock Town Hall, 133 Longview. 

Visit proposed well sites and existing well sites to understand well characteristics and logistics associated with the proposed San Juan Chama test wells.

The DPU Board will convene at 5 p.m. White Rock Town Hall for the tour (public invited) and reconvene at 7:30 p.m. at White Rock Town Hall for public discussion.

David Kratzer was just 3 seconds shy of a perfect prediction in Tuesday’s pace race.

The annual staggered-start pace-race/fun-run was held Tuesday on the White Rock bike path. The predictors with the slowest times started first from Piñon/Rocket Park, and the ones with the fastest times started last. The Jones family had many good predictions.

Elkins Top Predictor in Weekly Pace Race

Paul Elkins was the top predictor in the weekly pace race held at the Ponderosa Campground Trail in the Bandelier National Monument. 
 
He was 27 seconds off his predicted time. Ted Williams had a 47 second differential and Ted Romero was next at 108 seconds off.
 
Tom Sandford was the fastest one mile runner with a time of 13:33 and the top female in the one mile race was Sue Elkins at 16:45.

Next Council Meeting – Moved from TUESDAY to FRIDAY!

The Los Alamos County Council took action at its last meeting to move some of their Council meetings to Fridays at lunch-time instead of Tuesday evenings – hoping that a broader segment of residents might attend.

The first of these meetings is set for noon to 1:30 p.m. Friday, May 10 in Council Chambers.

New Bill on Horizon to End Doping of Racehorses

Ahead of Saturday’s Kentucky Derby, U.S. Sen. Tom Udall, D-N.M., and U.S. Reps. Ed Whitfield, R-Ken., and Joe Pitts, R-Penn., revealed draft legislation they intend to introduce to end doping in horseracing and kick cheaters out of the sport.

 
The Horseracing Integrity and Safety Act would provide the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) with authority to cleanup the sport and enforce anti-doping standards in races with simulcast wagering.
