Atomic Flying Pickles Attend White House Science Fair

GIRL SCOUT News:

The Atomic Flying Pickles of Los Alamos were selected to attend the third annual White House Science Fair Monday, April 22.

President Obama hosted the event and celebrated the student winners of a broad range of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) competitions from across the country.

First Lt. Garret Nelson Receives His Wings

USMC News:

Los Alamos High School graduate First Lt. Garret M. Nelson, USMC, received his wings April 12, as a United States Naval Aviator in the Marine Corps.

He will be flying the AH-1W Cobra Helicopter. Lt. Nelson will be training in San Diego and then stationed in North Carolina.

Lt. Nelson is a 2004 graduate of Los Alamos High School and a 2010 United States Naval Academy graduate, with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering.
 
Garret is the son of Lori and Lew Nelson and grandson of Nina and Allie Laird.

Udall, Heinrich, Luján Introduce Columbine-Hondo Wilderness Act

In celebration of Earth Day, U.S. Senators Tom Udall and Martin Heinrich reintroduced legislation Monday to designate the 45,000-acre Columbine-Hondo area in Taos County as wilderness – a proposal with strong support from the local community.

A companion bill will be introduced today in the House by U.S. Rep. Ben Ray Luján. 

Located in the Carson National Forest, the Columbine-Hondo has been managed as a “Wilderness Study Area” since 1980.

‘Atomic Man Duathlon’ Gears Up for Competition April 28

Named by Smithsonian Magazine as one of America’s top 10 “best small towns to visit” (April 2013), Los Alamos is host to the Atomic Man Duathlon – one of the best and most highly anticipated sporting events in New Mexico.

Now in its ninth year, the Atomic Man Duathlon is scheduled for April 28.

The Duathlon’s intermediate “fat man” course consists of a 10K run (twice around a 5K loop), followed by a 40K bike race; and concluding with a 5K run around one loop. The shorter “little boy” course is comprised of a 4K run; 15K bike race; and finishing with another 4K run.
