Today Marks Date Women Begin to Catch up to What Men Made Last Year

Column By Nina Thayer, AAUW, Leadership Corps

April 17 is the symbolic day this year when women will on average catch up with the amount men made in the previous year.

New statistics out this month show that New Mexico’s women make on average 77 percent of what our men make.

Forty years after the Women’s Movement of the early ‘70s, it is hard to imagine that this gender pay gap continues.

More women work outside the home than 40 years ago; more women attend college than 40 years ago; more women are the only wage earner for themselves and their family than 40 years ago.

I love lifestyles!

Column by Bonnie J. Gordon

Since I was a baby journalist in high school, people have been trying to convince me that I should be writing hard news.

It’ll be much easier to maintain this regular pattern than it will be to add it to your life months down the road after a new life pattern has been Read More

New Developments in Glass Recycling

Column by Tom Nagawiecki

During the question and answer session of every presentation given over the last two years, I have been asked why Los Alamos does not recycle glass. Up to this point my answer has always been the same; there are no local markets, thus making glass recycling a high cost and high environmental impact activity.

In a recent visit to the Village of Angel Fire, New Mexico County staff was exposed to a local glass recycling system that is successfully diverting glass from the landfill in a financially and environmentally responsible manner.

An Opportunity for a Great Conversation

Dear Editor,

How long has it been since you shared a great conversation over savory hors d’oeuvres and luscious deserts?

How often do you have the chance to talk informally to some of our community’s most knowledgeable and creative people?

On April 22 you can join us in supporting the Los Alamos Public Schools Foundation in their “Great Conversations” fundraiser.

My wife, Emily, and I have participated in the past and find it a most enjoyable and rewarding way to spend a few hours on a Sunday afternoon while donating to an organization that does so much to enhance our students’ learning Read More
