FBI: Mescalero Man Pleads Guilty To Sexual Abuse

ALBUQUERQUE – A Mescalero man pleaded guilty to engaging in sexual acts with a minor.

According to court documents, between December 2019, and February 2021, Deverne Torres, Jr., 45, an enrolled member of the Mescalero Apache Tribe, performed multiple sex acts with Jane Doe, a minor who had not attained the age of 16.

Torres pleaded guilty to sexual abuse of a minor. At sentencing he faces up to 15 years in prison.

NMDOT Launches Platform For Transportation Projects

SANTA FE — The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) has launched a new interactive digital platform that makes it easier for the public to explore transportation projects planned across New Mexico.

The electronic Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (eSTIP) uses Geographic Information System technology to display projects on a dynamic, statewide map. Users can zoom into specific regions, click on individual projects for details and search projects by location. FBI: Arizona Woman Pleads Guilty To Federal Assault Charges In Drunk Driving Crash

ALBUQUERQUE — An Arizona woman pleaded guilty to a 2023 drunk driving crash that seriously injured two people.

According to court documents, Dec. 30, 2023, Shaina Shorty, 36, an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, drove while intoxicated and crashed into a vehicle occupied by Jane Doe 1 and Jane Doe 2. As a result of the crash, both Jane Doe 1 and Jane Doe 2 sustained serious bodily injuries.

Shorty pleaded guilty to two counts of assault resulting in serious bodily injury. At sentencing she faces up to 10 years in prison.

Diné Victory In Farmington—Exhibition Documents Fight Against Proposed Power Plant

SANTA FE — The story of three remarkable Diné (Navajo) women who helped defeat the construction of a coal-fired power plant on the Navajo Nation, known as Desert Rock, is the focus of a new exhibition, “A Question of Power,” at the New Mexico History Museum in Santa Fe.

The weather has been unseasonably warm in Northern New Mexico this past week. Winter is loosening its grip, and more fishing locations are opening. Bank fishing at lakes is normally good at this time of year. The streams have yet to be swollen from spring runoff and could also provide good fishing. 

The ice-fishing season was a real dud this year. The only spot open for most of the season was Hopewell Lake. Eagle Nest Lake was open for about a week, and Fenton Lake was never able to offer ice fishing.
